Republican gubernatorial candidate Peter Mills is conducting a tour of Togus VA Medical Center and Maine Veterans’ Homes. Over the next ten days, Mills will visit the homes in Caribou, Bangor, Augusta and Scarborough to see how the state can better serve the needs of our veterans. Mills fought on Navy destroyers in the Vietnam War and his daughter, Kate, is currently on active duty in the Army.
“This tour is a reminder that thousands of Mainers are serving our country overseas, and that we must advocate for their care when they return home,” says Mills. “While Togus and our six veterans homes are paid for primarily through federal funds, it is our job to manage them and stand up for the needs of our veterans.”
Former Marine Captain and former CEO of Maine Veteran’s Homes, Tim Politis says, “Peter and I both served in Vietnam. Even though he’s a Navy guy, he’s a strong advocate for all Maine veterans’ issues.”
That advocacy included supporting a bill that created financial incentives for veterans to live in Maine, and a program to expedite retired military becoming public school teachers.
