Dennis: There is no documented link between plastic bolltes and cancer. There is a well documented linl between cancer and smoking. People choose to smoke, or eat too much, or not to exercise.

Your "analogy" is a difference in kind and not a difference in degree. The European nations have adopted a state run system that saddles their economy with chronic double digit umemployment.

If the US moves to such a system it will reduce our economic growth and create an ongoing excuse for the continued growth of goverment. Our children's future opportunities will be diminished.

A single payer system is absolutely NOT the ONLY way to go. There are many other ways to have an effect and improve on the system we have(i.e. tort reform, competition between states, tax credits to name just a few)

And why exactly should I have to contribute to a system and be treated exactly the same as a smoker, the overweight or someone who takes risks with sex and could contract HIV? All of these people make choices that effect their health. This is what is being proposed.

The gov't is already involved in health care and consumes 50% of all healthcare in the country now. Think that might have something to do with the high cost?? How about the way Medicare/Medicaid pays doctors less than cost in some cases???

Sure, if you want to give up your freedom, liberty and hard earned cash, then single payer is the ONLY choice. Forget about ever balancing the budget, EVER. Dollar will be worth little to nothing.

I AM not interested in giving up any of that. Hopefully, I will still have a choice when this debate is over.

Hold people accountable for their health?

To an extent, this is fine. However, so much of our lives is beyond our control. Plastic of bottles leaching into our Poland Springs water...is that cancer by choice? Extreme analogy? Maybe, but holding folks accountable for their health is extreme without any qualifications.

A single payer system to cut the for-profit middle men we term "insurance companies" is the only way to go. Most advanced societies on the planet have already figured this out. Accountability for one's own health has nothing to do with it.
